Excavator parade on the site of the former MD Papierfabrik in Dachau
Dachau, August 17, 2021. Demolition and soil remediation work at the MD site in Dachau is suspended until early September. This is because the Karl company workers, who carry out the heavy work on site, will be on vacation until then. So during their downtime, the excavators have been lined up in a parade on the site to allow Dachau families and any other bystanders to view the heavy equipment used to carry out the demolition and soil remediation work. The excavator show can be viewed at the Isaria information tower in Ostenstrasse until the beginning of September. The square around the information tower will be open Wednesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
“The fact that work on the site will be at a standstill until the beginning of September is definitely a relief for the neighboring residents. We know that the demolition work, although necessary, is a burden for our neighbors. We try to minimize the inconvenience as much as possible using a water spray system to reduce the dust and a tire wash system that washes dirt off the trucks before they leave the site. Even so, some noise and dirt still persists. We hope everyone understands and we thank the residents for their patience so far. By the end of the year, I expect that much of the work will have been completed. However, we will still have to clean up the Mühlbach river next year,” says David Christmann, Managing Director of Isaria, which is developing the project site of the former paper mill in cooperation with the property owner Deutsche Wohnen.
The Mühlbach, which has flowed underground until now, is to be converted into an above-ground river with riverbank promenades for local recreation as part of the neighborhood development. This will make the river usable to the public for the first time in over 100 years in its section on the MD site. This was one of the citizen requests that emerged from the citizen participation processes during the “Open Space in Focus” planning workshop held in 2015 and 2016. The Mühlbach will have to be diverted into a temporary stream bed in 2022 before the river course can be re-naturalized. The superstructure above the river will then be demolished and the riverbed rehabilitated. Only then will the river return to its original bed.
As an aside: around 600,000 tonnes of soil have been moved so far in the newly emerging district Mühlbachviertel on an area of 1.4 hectares which is being redeveloped. This corresponds to the weight of about 60,000 elephants. Around 20 percent of the soil mass is processed on the site, where it is directly recycled. 80 percent of the material is also processed and used off-site, for example as recycled concrete used at other construction sites.
